Back in the olden days, celebrity rivalry was just Nora Aunor vs. Vilma Santos. Let’s relive those golden, glorious moments with these two actresses singing each their own version of, what do you know, “I saw Mommy Kizzing Santa Klaws.” (OMG! Christmas is nearing!)

    whew! my first time to hear their version of the song. how come vi’s version is more pleasing to the ears? the song fits her voice. what happened to ate guy?

    i had fun listening to vilma’s version, and its not even christmas yet..hehe. sure, it will sound greater comes teh “ber” months. Vilma’s version really is a lot better than nora’s. what happened to the so-called golden voice?

    Alam nyo what is wrong kay Ate Vi? Super conscious sya sa look nya kaya di niya ma-dare gumawa ng mga film na deglamorized ang main character. Limited yung mga film nya na nag-fofocused sa real life na may cultural and sociological perspective na kung baga panlaban sa international award. Na-focused sya sa komiks-radio type of movie. Mabibilang sa daliri yung mga ginawa nya na masasabing may impact culturally. Yung mga ginawa nya na masasabing may cultural relevance:
    1. Burlesk Queen
    2. Pagputi ng Uwak,Pag-itim ng Tagak (kaya lang modernized parin ang character nya dito,city girl. Sana ginawa na lang syang barrio lass dito since most of the scenes here were shot in rural areas to depict filipino culture, like yung pabasa sa background/musical scoring, prusisyon etc.)
    3. The Dolzura Cortez Story
    4. Bata-Bata Paano ka Ginawa?
    5. Sister Stella L.
    6. Dekada ‘70
    Siguro ang habol niya dito ay Box-office Hit, kaya naging Hall of famer sya as Box-Office Queen.
    Masasabi rin siguro na it’s the trend and kasi naman hindi mulat ang mga Pinoy during those decades. Dapat may sampalan, may naaapi na lumaban, may iyakan na prolonged pa. Pang-komiks nga sus !!! o kaya Bomba pictures!!! I remember Sister Stella L. na sumemplang sa Takilya over Sharon Cuneta’s Komiks Film na “Bukas Luluhod ang mga Tala” ba yun?
    In comparison to Ate Guy:
    Si Super Bulilit, she don’t really care how she looks on the screen. Mas marami syang nagawang film na Culturally proud ako.Like:
    1. Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos
    2. Bona ( very filipino character, very submissive and fanatic)
    3. Ina Ka ng Anak Mo(slum area, may radio soap opera pa sa background sound effect ba yun?)
    4. Atsay ( hey don’t give the world an idea on how submissive we are!!!)
    5. Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo ( nakarelate ako sa kanya dito, SSOBBRAA!!!!!)
    6. Flor Contemplacion Story
    7. Bakit May Kahapon Pa?
    8. Sidhi
    9. Minsan may isang Ina
    10.Ang Totoong Buhay ni Pacita Macaspac
    11. Himala
    Nora I believe doesn’t care if magiging box-office hit ba ang mga films nya.At hindi glamorous ang mga characters na ginampanan n’ya dito. Kaya naman hindi sya masyadong naluklok as Box-Office Queen sad to say. Kasalanan iyan ng masa na hindi pa mulat sa tunay na Works of Art. Marami na akong napanood na pelikula, mostly foreign films from France, Iran, Germany, China, Japan, Italy, Tibet, Mongolia, Korea, Russia, Israel, South Americans, Spain, Portugal etc. hundreds and hundreds of them. Kaya si Ate Guy AND Ate Vi are on my list. France’s films are very realistic parang hindi pelikula, siguro mga 85% parang real life documentary walang kyeme ang maga artista, HINDI MASYADONG COMMERCIALIZED.
    I hope to see Ate Vi and Ate Guy do more films like this. Palagay ko namumulat na ang sambayanang pinas ngayon. Look, they are now beginning to embrace Independent Films, WOWWW!!!, saludo ako.

    The form of film making here in America to the likes of Ate Vi and Ate Guy films in comparison.Ito ang napapansin ko, they don’t focus on too much crying or prolonged crying to the point that may mga instances na it takes few seconds lang ang allocation nila for crying. Kung minsan yung main character pigil o restrained pa yung pag-iyak. Yun lng po ang napapansin ko. Kaya po ako if I watch Filipino films especially yung may namatay or namatay na nga hay sus ko ilang minuto yun na ibinabad makikita mo yung mukha na uhugin talaga.

    To compare this two actress to foreign actresses? Here how it goes:
    1. Vilma is more like Meryll Streep, excellent in dialogue, superb body movement required in the scenes,very natural especially in domestic drama like yung magbubukas ng cabinet to put something on the dining table then sasawayin yung mga anak, tawag sa katulong, sasagot sa phone and biglang magswi-switch yung emotions nya galit sya ngayon, then biglang tatawa nung may tumawag na iba. Yung dialogue nya the way she delivers it ang pamatay nya, very natural. Like yung scene sa “Relasyon” I remember the line “Magigising ka, Babangon ka, Maliligo, Magbibihis, Kakain Ka,then papasok ka sa Trabaho, Then pag dating mo magbibihis ka, Kakain Ka, Matutulog, yun lang ng yun walang pinag-iba, Ako Salita ako ng Salita pero Ikaw pag kinakausap kita di ka sumasagot puro ka lang UHHH, UHHH”, di ba napaka-effective and natural. Very Soft, superbly emoted dialogue delivery, a very realistic and highly effective acting, she needs to maintain this hwag lng nyang i-ooverrrr or excessive. She can also restrained act like in “Karma”,pigil, sinampal lang nya si Ronaldo Valdez after the rape scene. Walang masyadong dialogue and movement but then you can feel her pain and anguish.Sabi lng nya ” Ikakasal ako”
    2. Nora is more like Jodie Foster or Hernanda (I forget the last name), she is a mexican actress.Very strong performance, di kailangan ang masyadong glamour. Very hard, intense ,restrained, pigil, effective acting. Kung minsan kasi you easily relate to someone who is trying to control herself to cry. Mas dama mo ang anguish kesa duon sa umiiyak ng todo-todo na akala mo mahihimatay. Pero in some remote cases kailangan din syempre yung para kang ginunawan ng mundo na talagang papalahaw ka sa iyak but you have to justify it why pumalahaw ka ng iyak, siguro in the beginning restrained, then restrained again then di mu na makayanan then palahaw.

    8.Banaue vs. Wonder Vi ( both in a way, depicts life of a native or uncivilized)

    13.Dolzura Cortez Story vs. Flor Contemplacion Story ( both true story,both with names of the person in the title, both died in the end, both left behind their children, both have social relevance and challenges social awareness)
    14.Sidhi/Paru-parong Itim vs. Bugso/Ibulong mo sa Diyos ( both films, they tackle the role of a blind person)
    15. King Khayam and I vs. Erap is my Guy ( both are paired with Joseph Estrada)
    16.Little Christmas Tree vs. Batya’t Palu-Palo/Bato Sa Buhangin/Ikaw ang Mahal Ko ( both paired with FPJ )
    17. Nora was teamed-up With Edu Manzano, and Vilma was teamed-up with Christopher, both estranged husband)
    18.T-Bird At Ako vs. Relax ka Lang Sagot Kita ( both played litigation lawyers)
    And many more….except that in extremes Vilma never played the ultimately abused domestic helper and Nora never played the gyrating, sexy, enticing Burlesk Dancer. Did Nora ever played the role of a mistress or did Vilma ever played the role of a low class farmer?

    Should a chance exist to remake Sister Stella L. and Himala. I would like to have Nora do Sister Stella L. and Vilma do Himala.

    Should a chance exist to remake Atsay and Alyas Baby Tsina, I would like Vilma do Atsay and Nora do Alyas Baby Tsina.

    Should a chance exist to remake Flor Contemplacion Story and Tagos ng Dugo, I would like Nora to do Tagos ng Dugo and Vilma do Flor Contmeplacion Story.

    Should a chance exist to remake Dolzura Cortez Story and Burlesk Queen, Nora is my first choice no doubt.

    Should a chance exist to remake Ang Totoong Buhay ni Pacita Macaspac and Ina ka ng Anak Mo, Vilma will be the best to play the title role, no doubt.

    To remake Relasyon and Karma, no doubt my choice is Nora, of course.

    Minsa’y isang Gamu-Gamu and Andrea, Paano Ba ang Maging isang Ina remake?
    Wonder Vi can do it.

    Broken Marriage and Ipagpatawad Mo remake?
    Si Super Gee na kesa iba, of course.

    Condemned and Bakit may Kahapon pa? remake? Syempre si Tondo Girl na kesa iba pa.

    Bata-Bata Paano ka Ginawa? and Rubia Servios? Si Batang Iriga na syempre pa.

    Merika and Tatlong Taong walang Diyos?
    syempre pa di si Velma.

    Ibulong mo sa Diyos and Karma remake?
    syempre si Nura, walang duda.

    at marami pang role reversal, etc. etc.

    I believe “Dekada 70″ is originally offered to Nora so the script, screenplay and maybe acting is patterned after Nora. But Vilma made it. She instantly was transform to a subdued- acting actress. See what I mean? No one canbe branded hysteric or subdued, it depends on the script, screenplay and the story. I wanna see Miss. Aunor do a monologue or a sort of delivering a Kilometric dialogue like what Vilma did in “Burlesk Queen” while talking to her dying father, Leopoldo Salcedo and also in “Pagputi ng Uwak, Pag-itim ng Tagak” when talking to Bembol Roco or in “Ibulong mo sa Diyos”. I definitely believe Miss. Aunor can do the same. Delivery of lengthy dialogue in one situation and effective use of eyes in another, in one movie will make a big revelation. Vilma’s acting in “Relasyon” is branded “hysteric”. But I don’t believe this claim. The situation in the movie calls for a hysteric reaction after being submissive for sooooo longgggg time to a very passive and dominating Emil (Christopher) ,the need to confront him when loosing her sense of self respect is essential scene in the movie, too much is enough!!! HOW WOULD YOU REACT IF YOU WERE IN HER SHOES? I remember the line “Bilang No. 2 wala kang legal personality, ang mamanahin ng mga illegitimate child kalahati lang o 1/4 ng mamanahin ng legitimate child, Iha mahirap yang pinasok mong yan, talo ka all the way”. If you use subdued acting here, how would you attack the role/situation ?Maybe your eyes will work alone here and then lost consciousness, fainting. But how would you communicate to let the aggressor- a very special person in your life knows that you are achingly and badly surprised and fed up. I saw Ate guy in “Bilangin ang mga Bituin sa Langit”, she is awesome in this movie, the only thing I don’t like is when she “diin” the dialogue like in one confrontation scene with Tirso “Ang hindi nakakakilala sa pangalang Magnolia dela Cruz ay AH-SU(aso) lamanggg…” Si Ate Vi naman I don’t like her scene with Gabby in “Bukas Sisikat din ang Araw”. Sino po ba ang gumawa ng script, screenplay and nag-direct nito, Naku!!!!. Supposed to be nag-agawan sila ni Gabby ng Baril and then instantly biglang naglitanya ng dialogue si Ate Vi, kulang at wala yung transformation of scenes and emotions. Sana medyo napagod muna si Ate Vi from that agaw baril scene, probably panting or tired- looking or nag-aapoy sa galit yung mga mata then look back to Gabby then the realization then dialogue. Instead tinalikuran nya si Gabby and face the camera then dialogue kaagad. Pag ako nag-direct nun mate-take 2 sila. Not convincing yung scene, I would never have a second thought of revising the screenplay and script. Sometines nagagago ang mga actors no matter how good they are gawa din ng director, script and screenplay. AYYYY sorry po saan na naman tayo napunta. Kakainip kasi yung topic natin ngayon. The better Rendition for the song ” I saw mommy kissing Santa Clause”. Produkto iyan nung mga musical arranger, voice mixer and sound Engineer nyan,isinama na rin sana nila yung proper phonetics and diction when conceiving this project. Naging lively yung kay Ate Vi kasi the musical arranger is thinking. Thinking happily because the song itself is a naughty child’s song talking during a very wonderful and happy season of the year!!!! Hindi lang masyadong umakma sa spirit ng Christmas yung kay Ate Guy, a little slow lang ang tempo. Although Ate Vi until now, amazes me with her rendition of “Sweet sixteen” thinking she is not a singer per se and never competed in any singing jamboree, nakikiuso lang sa wari. Practice and more Voice lessons lang ang kailangan ni Ate Vi (Sino ba ang manager ni Ate Vi at that time, kakainis sya, kung sino man sya!!!). Orig ang voice ni Wonder Vi and she can be lined up to the kind of Brenda Lee or Sue Thompson (yung nag sing ng “Sad Movies” ba yun?) should she given a rigorous voice coaching and lessons…. Hay naku!!!! humaba na naman ang usapan natin.. VIlma!!!!Nora!!!!Vilma!!!Nora!!!!hep,hep, Hooray!!!!!

    Vilma’s version is better and more lively. Nora is a good singer and an of experienced singer. I like her, specially when she sings “Pearly Shells” and “Tiny Bubbles”. Vilma amazed me with her “Sweet Sixteen” to think that she is not a singer and acting is her forte. Should she given a rigorous voice lessons, practice and good pieces of songs she could emerged as “The Brenda Lee of the Philippines”.Vilma is good in emoting and delivering dialogues, you don’t need to see her facial expressions or body movement to relate, truly a multi-media actress. She can voice act on the radio or on the stage with a huge crowd watching not merely focusing on her face. But Alas!!!She is not limited to this kind of acting, she can also be a “psychological” actress, meaning she can also use her eyes with less dialogue if the story, screenplay,script and situations ask for it as seen in “Dekada 70″. I like Nora too, specially in “Sidhi” I like this movie(I wonder why she did not win any award for this movie) and also worth mentioning “Flor Contemplacion”, “Ina Ka ng Anak Mo” etc. Also, I wanted to see Nora focus more on dialogue and body movement not just using her eyes. Don’t use to much “diin” on the words just to emphasize it or maybe you are like this in real life? Vilma and Nora or Nora and Vilma are the only high caliber actresses that the Philippine cinema ever produced to date. Please learn from one another’s acting ability. Try different approaches. Nora can adopt Vilma’s acting and Vilma can adopt Nora’s acting para naman hindi kayo branded. So no one can compare you with each other. Whether who is hysteric, subdued, soft or hard acting actress. Halo-halo lang po.
    AY!!!! Ba’t saan napunta ang usapan. Sorry po…

    Vilmanian ako FOREVER kaya bias na ako!

    What I did was – pinarinig ko sa mga pamangkin kong aged 5 to 8 years old. Sobrang nakakatawa ang reactions nila – yung isa upon hearing Nora song, napapikit sa mata na parang inantok. Pero nung pinarinig ko dun sa version ni Vi, bigla ng napasmile at me konting indak. Say ng mga kids, better daw yung 2nd version, which is Vi’s.

    Try nyo daw for yourself.

    di na ako bago sa mga kantang pamasko ng dalawa.when i was in the philippines,madalas i-play sa 3 FM stations ang mga xmas songs nila every sunday morning.kakatuwa.nostalgic baga.lalo na si vi kasi di naman sya talaga singer pero ang tempo ng mga songs nya,mapapaindak ka.ang alam ko hanggang ngayon,they have played all songs not only xmas songs but pati na yung ibang songs nila.yung mga songs ni vilma,mostly orig,yung kay nora,ginaya lang sa mga foreign female singers like doris day,bassey,etc.

    Although I’m usually partial to Vilma, I’d say Nora’s is a better version by just a tad. I don’t see why people say she sang like she was at a wake. Yeah, Nora mispronounced Claus and a few other words, but Vilma couldn’t get the long e sound (creep, sleep,etc). But that’s typical of most Filipinos anyway.
    In any case, great find. Very entertaining!

    Yes that’s the way we sing it in the Philippines if we pronounce it in Pilipino. But since it is an English song it should be pronounce the way the Americans say it which is “clause”.

    I will take Vilma’s version of the song anytime over Nora’s version na pamburol. It’s a Christmas song not a funeral song for crying out loud!!!

    Voice quality wise, definitely Nora’s voice is superior. I beg to disagree about nora’s diction, re: “santa klaws”, that’s the correct way to pronounce it.

    Although vilma has never been a good singer, the song fits to her perfectly. It’s funny, hilarious child like. Her diction is something to make you laugh!
