Rocky Salumbides, Pinoy model

He represented the Philippines in the Best Model of the World Contest in Istanbul in December 2004, and made the country proud when he won as 3rd runner up. Rocky is of Filipino, Chinese and Puerto Rican descent. He stands 6′2″ and used to play basketball for his college varsity team. He is also a dog trainer.

Have you heard of his taong grasa story? There was a time when he had no place to sleep in Manila that he’ll sleep in Quiapo’s underpass. He’ll lather himself in black grease to look like a taong grasa so no one will bother him. Pang MMK talaga story nya.

Born Alvin Kirby Liwanag Salumbides, Rocky, as he is known amongst his family and friends, hails from Cavite (when he entered Iligan Medical Center College in 1999 as a freshman hotel and restaurant management student as a result of his failure to return to Metro Manila in time for the opening of classes in June, he told me (we were classmates) he and his family came from Trece Martirez City). During his few years in Mindanao, he lived with his maternal grandparents in Maranding district, Lala, a town in the province of Lanao del Norte. The latter own vast tracts of farmland in Lala, where his two other siblings attended their elementary education. His mother used to work at the Philippine Air Force Headquarters at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City. When he was studying in Iligan City from June 1999 to March 2000, he stayed with his maternal aunt, visiting his grand parents during the weekends. Prior to his stint in Mindanao, he attended a year of veterinary studies at Cavite State University (CvSU) in Indang, Cavite. Rocky is an animal lover, and during his days in Iligan, he raised a reticulated python which he captured somewhere near his aunt’s place. The python had been wounded, a sign that someone must have tried to kill it. He took good care of the creature like his own brother. He named him “Mokong”. At Iligan Medical, a small privately owned college, he was dubbed a campus hearthrob, loved by both gals and gays and envied by guys not gifted with good looks. Rocky’s down-to-earth and a “cowboy”, and was very nice and courteous to my mother, whom he addressed as “nanay” when he would visit her in her office or at home. We were very good friends during our freshman year. In 2001, he returned to Cavite and I have never heard from him since then.

I am glad you finally broke your silence. I simply could not believe there were, and there are still, a lot of people who would heap insults on you. I know you, having been classmates back in 1999. i just dont like the way rocky comments on “rica” of pbb double up. he must be thankful that he was born a straight guy. its never easy being male but not straight. rocky is judgmental in a sense he dont know rica that well and yet his impressions are then negative.
he should have put his feet on rica’s shoes. what if he was born gay? he should learn his lesson as early as now. i believe in karma and he shouldnt wait for it to come before he changes his perspective mostly with third sex.

The most recent switch brought about by Bagyong Walay brought quite a lot of opposing reactions. Some deemed it a good move to mix up the houses and add spice to what seemed a predictable relationship. Others felt it was unnecessary, and brought more harm than good. The housemates inevitably clashed and had to push themselves to adjust to their new surroundings. Everyone experienced discomfort, with one more than others.
Rica, a transgender, had no problems with her original housemates. She was well-appreciated for who and what she is. This did not seem to hold true in the other house, though, and the treatment she has been receiving there prodded the Society of Transvestites of the Philippines to make a statement about it. In the statement, they brought the situation to the forefront and questions how PBB seems to be condoning such actions.
Melai was likewise concerned with the growing discomfort of Rica within the house. She feared that Rica may be pushed to exit the house. Rica assured her, however, that she had such thought. She valued the efforts of the people around her who did much to make her PBB experience possible. True, she was affected by the treatment of others and felt the burden of co-existing with them. If she did get booted out, then she would accept it. Otherwise, she had no plans of giving up the game.
Rica was part of today’s winning team. After both houses went through the obstacle course, Kuya finally gathered everyone in the living room as he declared the winning team. With a total running time of 3 minutes and 36 seconds, House B would be rewarded with a film showing of “New Moon”, the latest movie release of the Twilight saga. House A accepted the news well, with the boys taking it lightly and the girls keeping their post-game analysis to a minimum.
How will Kuya address the concerns regarding Rica? How will relationships be within the mixed teams? Watch out for updates on PBB Double Up!

Hi sa inyong lahat….maraming salamat to your criticisms and comments..some are nice, some are so hurting kahit di naman nila gaanong kilala ang tunay na pagkatao at pinagmulan ni Rocky. WHile Rocky is still inside the Big Brother house, just please watch him na lang. I fyou really know Rocky that well at gusto nyo syang tirahin, antayin nyo na lang lumabas at harapin nyo sya…It is so hurting to read the comments, especially those bad ones para sa akin bilang nanay nya.
It was true that he was vending balut but not because we were that miserable. He was vending balut because he wanted to be an independent boy and to help me eased with hardshhip being a single Mom…Yes, it was ttrue also that he worked in the construction but it was my Dad, an engineer, who was his boss. I told my Dad not to give him special treatment so that he will learn in life…Totoo ang sinabi nung isang taga Iligan jan…Di naman kahirapan ang pamilya ko sa Mindanao. In fact, in more than 3 decades now, Salumbides ang Mayor sa Tagkawayan….Besides Rocky’s background, di ko sila pinalaki sa panggagamit ng kapwa, even my own family…He shouldn’t have grown poor if I chose to lean on my family…I came from a big family…we are 9 and mostly are all graduates from UP Diliman. Isa lang ang hindi fm UP but from PMA, class 81..he i now a casino opns manager assigned in Mactan…If you want to dig that, iam sure you have friends who go to the casino. His name is RJ Liwanag. To tell you, if Rocky has to use other people, mas madali kung lumapit kami sa sarili naming pamilya.. One of my sisters is a director for animal resources, University of Southern CA, my other sister is in Australia, a scientist, and a professor of Queensland university..My other brother owns a big animal hospital in Florida, one brother, a consultant in Saudi, one is taking care of our own family fishfarm in Lanao….BUT ALL THESE THINGS aren’t my point here…

I worked as an Intelligence Analyst sa Air Intellligence and Security Group…While I was playing soccer, I was featured in the newspaper..Doon nalaman ng pamilya ko kung nasaan kami, doon nag umpisang magbago ng kaunti ang buhay namin..Konti lang dahil hindi ko talaga kayang iasa ang buhay ko sa pamilya ko..ginusto ko tong mahhiwalay, itataguyod ko ang mga anak kong mag isa…When Rocky won the Best model contest, sabay din natapos ang isa nyang kapatid..tuloy pa din ang pag ikot ng gulong ng buhay namin…hanggang pinahinto na nila akong magtrabaho. However, I am aperson who wants to work so I continued to work as consultant to the Mayor of Trece Martirez, CAvite..until June this year…I left Phils June 12 to marry my Fiancee, now my husband here in the US.

HI Rocky, I’m Celle former officemate ko sa San Technology Cavite si Apple ang sister mo… I remember nagwork karin sa SanTech pero sandali lang ata.. friend ko rin sis mo and u know that she’s very proud of you.. kc when you started modeling lahat kmi sa office pinag text voting nya… I also remember super saya ni Apple and ur Mom (Hi Tita, i know hindi mo ko kilala pero i saw u already in Apple’s friendster pics) in short gusto ko lang sabihin kay Rocky na wag syang paapekto sa lahat ng naninira sa kanya Diyos na ang bahala sa mga taong ito ang mahalaga wala syang natatapakan at naaagrabyadong tao…. madami lang talagang Pinoy ang hindi nalnag maging masaya para sa kapwa Pinoy nila… Rocky, I was surprised when I heard ur in PBB na, hindi ko yung pinanonood pero mamaya pag uwi ko ng haus promise panooorin ko.. will pray for you and take care… Apple I know your busy with Ton Ton sa UAE hope we could meet someday.. just read the comment trail. bravo to rocky for his candid reaction. you can’t blame the guy for reacting to the comments whic criticized his looks, physical attributes, character, etc. we have to admit some of the comments here are quite hurtful and completely unwarranted. what did he do to them?
what he said about not having to be guapo to be a model is true. case in point: alek wek, the african top model who does shows of most of the major european designers. by most standards of beauty she would not make the grade. yet, her face has character and her other attributes make her an ideal model, hence her popularity among the couturiers.
having said that, beauty is a matter of taste. and taste is relative. i’m sure i am not alone is saying i like rocky’s face. it’s a nice masculine asian face, it’s got good features, with the right proportion and angles. just as there are those of us who appreciate his kind of male beauty, of course, there are those whose taste go for other types of beauty, e.g., caucasian, oriental, arab, etc.
i salute rocky for his decision to pose nude. it takes guts to make yourself totally ‘vulnerable’ by putting yourself out there in the buff, imperfections and all. yet he did. as he stated, he’s not a porn star, so why should it matter that his penis is average or less than what others would like it to be. that’s him, period. similarly, marisa berenson, a ’70s socialite/model/actress had posed nude for celebrated photographers such as richard avedon and irving penn. her small breasts were not an issue as far as the photographs were concerned. in fact the photos were published in vogue and playboy.
i can’t comment on the rica/pbb issue as i do not follow the show, neither on public tv nor on cable.
i commend rocky’s family and friends for speaking out in his defense. they know him so they are in the best position to say whether he is a user or arrogant, etc. or not. we do not know rocky personally so best to give him the benefit of the doubt, right?
let’s be happy for having someone like rocky who is achieving success in the international modeling scene. whether you like his looks or not, he is proudly pinoy and appreciated by the industry.

wilma doesn’t once came to his defense – “napariwara lang ng kaunti”. He was once probably the country’s most promising male model. as to those pics, model friends say he was really confused and had no one to turn to at that time. may mga problema lang. good thing there’s eula.
