When I studied photography, I encountered a fascinating definition of this hobby of mine: photography is like painting with light. When I sat in Jay Javier’s photoshoot with Jay Aquitania, however, I learned that portraiture photography is much more than just painting with light — it is painting with feelings and emotions, with both the photographer and the portrait subject as artists.

In one of the lighter moments during Jay Aquitania’s photoshoot, Jay Javier the photographer was trying to elicit a unique facial expression from the boy:
Jay Javier: “Try mo yung itsurang parang ‘huwag po, kuya!’”
Jay Aquitania: (visibly puzzled) “‘Huwag po, kuya!?’… eh hindi ko pa po na-experience yun eh.”
The handful of people in the studio giggled at the innocent reaction of Jay Aquitania. I was growling inside, “laughing in loud.” The boy’s so cute. Lovable, actually.
Here are more photos I snapped while the shoot was going on…

After the shoot, I had an opportunity to sit beside Jay A. for a quick lunch. I couldn’t resist asking Jay:
Migs: “Jay, karamihan ng readers ng blog ko mga bading. Siyempre dahil ang role mo sa RoXXXanne eh isang gay in the closet, di mo maaalis sa kanilang isipin na baka sa tunay na buhay eh, ehem-ehem, alam mo na… bading ka rin. Ano masasabi mo dun?”
Jay: “Ok lang sa akin yun.”
Migs: “Ha?! Ok lang?!”
Let me clarify, folks. From my interaction with Jay, I can vouch that he’s straight at hindi pumintig ang aking well-tuned gaydar (well, at least, for now ha… nineteen years old pa lang ang bata, huwag natin masyadong ipilit ang sarili nating kasarian, hehehe!) What he meant, and here I include how I read his body language and facial reaction, was that sanay na siya sa mga usual na intrigang ganun, and he is cool whatever people say about him behind his back. For such a young guy, I commend him for that. In fact, I told myself, I should learn from this guy!

As we were munching our McDo away, he also quipped, “pero di naman lahat ng naririnig ko tungkol sa sarili ko, negative. Marami din namang positive. Tulad ng mga nakapanood ng RoXXXanne. Nakakataba ng puso kapag nakakarinig ako ng good comments.”
That’s it, boy! Focus on the good, and let the negatives slide away. And because I’ve seen his portrayal of Marlon, the closet gay guy in RoXXXanne, I can say the boy can act. How did he land the role? Read Jun Lana’s post about Jay Aquitania.
If you’re curious to see the “final product” of the photoshoot… here’s a teaser (more to come!)
