Bukang Liwayway / Daybreak

coco-paolo_8.jpg

Naka-ilang relasyon ka this past year?

Ako? Ano ba yung gusto mo, yung pangmatagalan, o yung pangmadalian lang?

Bakit, ano ba yung pangmatagalan sa iyo?

Yung tatlong linggo, isang buwan.

* * *

What a sad, sad truth. Whether we like it or not, and however much we cite real cases where particular gay relationships stretch on into years, there is no denying that such partnerships generally last shorter than their heterosexual counterpart. Why do you think so?

* * *

The vision of a Bukang Liwayway (Daybreak) captures the complex beauty, explosive passion, and sadly, the cyclical transcience of gay love. This, and other issues surrounding gay relationships, are tackled in this newest Adolfo Alix Jr. indie film, Daybreak. The screenplay is beautifully written by Bebs Gohetia, with Coco Martin and Paolo Rivero as lead actors.

    EARLY REVIEW OF DAYBREAK:

    Hayok na hayok sa halikan
    ni: Allan Diones
    Abante Tonite

    http://www.abante-tonite.com/issue/feb1508/entertainment_diones.htm

I rarely dig into indie films, but I’m very fortunate to watch the premiere of director Adolfo Alix’s (”Donsol” & “Batanes”) movie DAYBREAK. And boy, oh boy…I fell in love with it.

It’s amazing how the film was able to captivate the feelings of every gay viewer knowing the ups and downs of complicated gay relationships. But what amazes me more is how the director and the actors were able to create a stark contrast of manly lust and despair in the climactic break-up sex scene (which at first I never thought it would be integral to the story). I would also say that the sex scenes there, though simulated, were very hot and, as my coyish friend tells it, “with feelings”…something that Filipino gay-themed indie films sorely lack. I heard that it took a number of takes by both Coco Martin and Paolo Rivero to perfect the kisses because “nagkakailangan pa sila”. But all throughout the movie, it was a mixture of kilig ang sadness. Especially the morning after when one of them left the other, much to his own dismay and heartbreak.

If there’s one thing that I’d like to improve about the film…is to remove the excess establishing scenes. Apart from that, everything else is perfect!

Kudos to Adolf, Paolo and Coco! Can’t wait to have it released on DVD!

    Kaya watch na kayo! :)

Iexplore nila ang gay relationships without having sex as a visual language.

Box office? I wish! LOL I was thinking originally ‘no’ dahil gay film pero in Korea tinangkilik [sp?] nila ang “The King and the Clown”. It’s a historical drama nga lang and no sex scenes but the main characters are 2 males, 1 gay and 1 straight, in a relationship. When it came out (2005-6), it was the highest-grossing local film during its time, making about $70 million. Sorry for the side story! :P

Yes, yes, men are pigs, assholes, whatever. It’s biology boys! Men are designed to spread their seed, to ensure propagation of the species. Yun nga lang if you’re gay, you’re probably implanting your seed in someone who doesn’t have a uterus. Blame no one. your balls don’t know the difference.

Ako, siguro yung Pang matagalan. I saw Wedding Banquet last night and I was struck dun sa sinabi ng chinese gay guy. Sabi nya ang hirap makahanap ng compatible sa mga tulad ko na gayman kaya he treasures the relationship with his lover. Parang tinamaan ako esp to someone like me na nasa Academe. mahirap pagtuunan ng pansin ang mga estudiante ko sa college. Of course I dont want to shit, where I eat.

Lalo pa sa mga Filipino. I am not bitter dahil sa wala akong ka on na Pinoy dahil sa mga previous na karanasan na dumaan sa akin with locals.

Gusto ko yung pangmatagalan. yung may kasama, yung may kausap, yung may kayakap, kalambingan, kaibigan, ka-ibigan, kalaro.

Si coco… walang kiyeme sa role. Yan yung talagang artista, sorry he is not my type pero gwapo sya sa film.

kaya nga Im looking for a long term until now. heheh does this looks like an invitation ?

Coco Martin, Harry Laurel/Chua, and Janvier Daily should make a film together. They’re the most fresh-looking, sexiest, and intriguing young actors ngayon. I liked Paolo Rivero a lot sa “Live Show” pero ‘di sila bagay ni Coco in this film IMO. He’s got a different appeal. He’d be better with Lauren Novero and Allen Dizon, all hot, moreno-ish, and Pinoy-looking.

Tigilan n’yo na’ng pag-e-emote! ;P Simple lang ang sagot d’yan: ‘Coz men are pigs.

Jedd, I agree with you 100%. I also think that it’s the lack of a social institution like marriage to protect gay relationships, that leads to the transcience of gay love. You are also right to be realistic and say that “more will survive” if gay marraige were legalized. It’s not the perfect solution, and we only need to look at heterosexual couples to see that a part of human nature is really unfaithful. Yet I do believe that the legalization of gay marraige will go a long way in “normalizing” the cycle of gay love.

  42. #12  Angel

    Ian is so 100% correct!

    Why don’t partnerships last?

A – Because most men are selfish, lying sluts who can’t keep their dicks in their pants and who don’t understand the concept of loyalty and being faithful. Or rather they do understand it – they just don’t think it applies to them.

B – Because a couple needs more than good times in the bedroom to make a relationship. You need a solid foundation of mutual R.E.S.P.E.C.T and understanding, have shared interests and friends and tolerate each other’s foibles.

C – Mistaking lust for love.

D – Not communicating and not listening.

E – Fighting over trivial issues that seem very important at the time but really don’t matter at all.

People change over time, relationships change – recognise this and adapt.

Before you start having a go at me, I freely admit I failed on most of the above at one time or another in the last 35 years. I’m no expert. I just pass on what I’ve learned to anyone who’s interested.

Learn to forgive him and yourself.

    08/02/01 03:33
  48. #6  Jedd

It’s because there’s no gay marriage that’s recognized legally and socially yet. There’s no concrete thing that tie the men together. No framework, no social expectations. I would bet that if gay relationships were given the chance to go in the same direction as straight relationships are expected to go: from crush, to boyfriends, to marriage, to family, to old age, I think more would survive.

I’d also like to believe that a single gay guy would be less likely to prey on a man if he knew he was already married.
    Oh, wait. AGGGH! We’re doooomed!
