A woman’s face with nature’s own hand painted,
Hast thou, the master mistress of my passion;
A woman’s gentle heart, but not acquainted
With shifting change, as is false women’s fashion:
An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling,
Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth;
A man in hue all hues in his controlling,
Which steals men’s eyes and women’s souls amazeth.
And for a woman wert thou first created;
Till Nature, as she wrought thee, fell a-doting,
And by addition me of thee defeated,

hi migs. you picked the perfect sonnet for this entry. here shakespeare was said to have been referring to a man whom he very well admires. notice the puns in the poem with the usage of the word “prick” and that by ‘addition’ [of that prick] he of thee [or thou love] has been defeated. this sonnet is one which adds another layer of suspicion to shakespeare’s sexuality. but then again, artists in an entirely different era… who knows what was ‘in’ and romantic back then. point being, i see from your wide selection of men that you got taste, migs. and apparently even for literature and poetry. i should know, i’m an english/literature major myself.
