Honoring A Truly Revolutionary Gay Man

Val Mante is one truly revolutionary gay man — and this post was written in honor of him. More than 3 years ago, he was at the frontpage of the Inquirer, as one-half of the first married gay couple of the CPP-NPA. Read on.

Reds officiate first gay marriage in NPA

DARE to struggle, dare to win … as married gays. After raiding a few Army camps, two communist guerrillas hid in a forest gorge and fell in love.

Deeply.

That was three years ago. On Friday, under a romantic drizzle in a muddy clearing in Compostela Valley province in Mindanao, Ka Andres and Ka Jose exchanged vows in a heavily guarded ceremony before local villagers, friends from the city and their comrades in arms.

They are considered the first homosexual couple in the New People’s Army (NPA) who were wed by the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

During the “wedding,” sponsors draped a sequined CPP flag around the couple’s shoulders. The flag was held in place by a long, beaded cord which also went around the couple and the sponsors — symbolizing that their marriage would be made stronger with the help of comrades and the masses.

Andres held a bullet, as did Jose and each other’s hands. The bullets represented their “commitment in the armed struggle.”

Throughout the ceremony, a choir serenaded them with revolutionary love songs. After they signed their “wedding contract,” the newlyweds kissed amid the usual applause.

Jose recalled the day he first visited the NPA camp for his revolutionary integration — a practice resorted to by city-based revolutionary activists before their deployment in the countryside.

This was the first time he met Andres, who was preparing audio-visual materials for a basic revolutionary education seminar.

Jose was young and had a sexist, macho attitude and thought Andres was a typical tiguwang bayot (old gay), an object of scorn and ridicule.

Andres, an education instructor in the movement, was busy with his work and did not take too much notice of Jose.

Besides, Andres already had a boyfriend. Later, the two started to discuss politics.

“I began to understand the revolution and why gays are discriminated by society,” Jose said in an interview.

Started as friends

When Jose’s integration program ended, he decided to join the NPA. It was Andres who accompanied him to the armed unit — his first assignment.

They met several times during education training. At the start, it was purely a comradely interaction. Later, it became romantic.

“I realized he was caring and malambing (affectionate). He would never leave me in times of difficulty,” Jose said.

Andres recalled when they both got separated from their comrades on their way to get supplies. It was raining and Andres spent the night alone in the forest without provisions. The following day, he ran into
Jose, who had also spent the night in the woods, looking for him.

‘Sweetheart’

Jose once confided to Andres that sometimes, he would find himself attracted to female comrades.

“I don’t get jealous. Even if we are away from each other for months

because of the nature of our respective works. I trust him,” Andres said.

Neither is their age gap an issue. Jose is 21 while Andres is 54. They call each other “sweetheart.”

“Andres helps me overcome the challenges and to become strong politically and ideologically,” Jose said.

When the couple realized they were falling in love, they immediately sought the approval of their respective “collective” or cell unit.

It is the collective’s responsibility to foster a strong relationship within the group and members are assessed every four months.

First gay marriage

As the first same-sex marriage in the NPA, theirs is a union long awaited by comrades who support gay rights in the movement. It is also a manifestation of the communist movement’s recognition of the
right to engage in gay relations and to marry.

Although the CPP already recognized gay relations and same-sex marriage, it was not easy for Andres and Jose to make the decision to finally marry.

First, the couple worked hard to change the traditional mind-set of some comrades regarding gays and gay relationships. They attributed these biases to the prevailing “patriarchal” culture in Philippine society.

On gay relations

“[We] conducted painstaking discussions to make comrades understand gay relations and gay rights,” Andres said.

“Gay cadres adhere to the strong Party discipline. They enhance the prestige of gays in the movement. This has gained positive results through the years. Comrades (male and female) and even the masses
have learned to respect and recognize gays and their contribution to the revolution,” he said.

As early as 1995, the CPP’s Southern Mindanao Regional Party Committee started to discuss gay rights in the movement.

In 1998, a provision on gay relations and same-sex marriage was added to the CPP’s guiding policy on relations contained in a document titled “On the Proletarian Relationship of Sexes (OPRS).”

Under the OPRS, the communist movement is committed to guide and ensure there is no exploitation in any relationship-heterosexual or homosexual.

What about kids?

During the wedding ceremony, comrades asked Jose — in jest — if Andres could sexually satisfy him.

“If there is love, everything follows, including sexual satisfaction,” Jose confessed.

The couple was also asked if they planned to have kids.

The newlyweds said they would deal with the issue later.

From my blogger-friend Mandaya Moore-Orlis, as posted in RBP:

Siya si Val Mante, dating secretary general ng Bagong Alyansang Makabayan.

Bakla. Lagi ko syang nakikita sa mga “theater tours” namin noon.

Noong mga huling taon ng 1990s, bigla syang naglaho sa city. Umakyat pala ng bundok. Sumapi sa New People’s Army.

[Thanks Ate Mandaya for sharing.]

I was very touched by the early part of the story.  That this IS possible, that we are equals.  But the update was shocking.  I could not help but weep.  Three years in a relationship… ano na nangyari kay Ka Jose?  Life is sooo short.  Communist, Marxist, Leftist, Purist, whatever, what does this story tell us?
Til death do us part.

    Heartbreaking.

It’s hard to swallow that the affirmation of gay marriage is rooted in the communist ideology of the NPA. First off, gay rights is not first in the minds of the NPA. It’s eyes are set on achieving armed struggle, and towards that end, luring gay radicals to their camp is more of a pragmatic means to achieve that end.

Nowhere in communist ideology would you find gay rights at the forefront of their issues. And evolving to include gay rights in the struggle isn’t a sign of ideological acceptance but merely an adaptation of the realities on the ground – the apparent homosexuality of men and the need to have them.

I don’t believe in NPA ideology, but I do believe that its affirmation of gay rights is in line with that ideology. First of all, the ideology following Mark also believes that religion is the opium of society, so the question about religious morality is not relevant.  Second, it is supposed to give voice to the ‘oppressed’ of society and it wants to recognize the gay sector is one of those marginalized. What makes its acceptance of gay rights revolutionary is that even gender issues have been relegated to the margins by Marxism. At some point in the past, and perhaps still in the present, the communist hierarchy had been sexist and blind to the realities of oppresion experienced by both women and gays.

I do think that the comments here which say that the NPA was just being too pragmatic by affirming gay rights is “mababaw”. It could be both pragmatic and ideological.

Of course, the most fundamental issue is one that concerns armed struggle. I don’t think that it is the way forward.  Social transformation without deep recognition of structures of limitations is bound to fail. For me, change still needs to come from within the system. Attack the system from inside, not outside.  Change may be slower, but could be more effective.

the love, sincerity and courage of both, and the progressive stance of the NPA are exemplary which can certainly be applauded and appreciated. but, the many problems posed by the NPA in order to advance their ideology can’t be dismissed that easily. both the NPA and the government armies have casualties and victims in defense of their philosophies and politics. it is a dilemma for most of us who are spectators to their battles. i understand the aims and struggles of the NPA but at the same time i also know that the world have yet to see a truly equal and successful socialist or communist society. russia and other previous block countries are great examples of its failure. cuba and north korea are also NOT shining examples of the communist ideology because of enumerable inequalities and sufferings of their citizenries. even china is embracing more and more of the capitalist system. despite the politics however, both jose and andres deserve our congratulations and best wishes.

No ba yan damn if you do damn if you don’t.  It just shows that in some sub culture like for example what the communist believes, there is such thing as equality mga badet.

bongga! It just shows that they take liberal in the NPA more intellectually… And friends, we shouldn’t worry because just like the African-Americans, there’s no way to go but be accepted in society… eventually. And we are fighting for it.

It is so beautiful and tragic. I  can just imagine how difficult it was to live up there in the mountains.  Having “the one” surely made a big difference for both of them.  I admire their openmindedness, the love, courage and fidelity to be together inspite of the obvious odds. Val Mante, wherever you are, you have lived a full life—an inspiration.

what do  you think guyz? PLU might join this group just to have the feel of getting married coz it’s being accepted in there organization, the opportunity to get what we dreamed of a “family” up there in the mountains coz the society don’t  want to recognize and give us that right  nor the opportunity to marry whom we want irregardless of gender and have our own family….quite troublesome for PLU to live up there, in which all the basic necessities of life are missing  but we might grab this situation one day when there’s no hope just to go up there and be free and be accepted….

i agree with broken heart. as much as empowering, radical, and alluring this story seems, i for one do not think that the NPA allows gay marriage because it is progressive, rather I think it does so to market itself to ostracized and disillusioned gays in the mainstream and to stop the existing gays in NPA from leaving. It is more because of pragmatic reasons than actual advancement of our movement that this story could be believed as real.

This story is just unbelievable. I can think of many theories which might conflict each other. But what the hell, its the NPA we r talkin about… I think this is a plot by the NPA to lure more people to join them. Them doing the “marriage” is boldly saying: “Gays, join us for we can “marry” 2 people.” They know theres a lot of gays hangin around and they could possibly trample the government. Their showing what they could give to the unnoticed groups in Philippine society…. Pure Tempation.
