Mario Maurer is Cinemanila’s SEA Best Actor

Thai teen heartthrob and “Love of Siam” star Mario Maurer was recently declared Best Actor in Cinemanila 2008’s South East Asia (SEA) Film Competition. The Love of Siam (Thai: Rak haeng Sayam) is a 2007 Thai romantic-drama film, written and directed by Chookiat Sakveerakul. A multi-layered family drama, a controversial element of the story is a gay romance between two teenage boys. Mario Maurer leads the cast as a teenage boy entangled in family, romantic, and social issues.

i was really going to watch “im a cyborg but that’s ok” but all the good seats where taken, so i ended watching “love of siam” instead, w/o any idea what the movie is all about, i enjoyed the film, even though i missed watching the other film “night bus”, i loved it, it was funny, heartwarming. two thumbs up!

The Love of Siam is such a great movie. This made me cry buckets. ang galing ng pagkakagawa. kaso Dekada Cinemanila messed up with the subs at the end! there was a scene where Tong gives Mew the wooden nose as the last part of the wooden christmas toy he had given to Mew when they were little.
the lines should be:
Tong: i can’t be your boyfriend, but it doesnt mean i dont love you.
Cinemanila’s subs were:
Tong: i CAN be your boyfriend, but it doesnt mean i dont love you.
it completely altered the story! i was really disappointed with Cinemanila for messing up with Tong and Mew’s love story. sigh.

Although running at almost 3 hours, the movie is never a bore. It is wholesome, rich, multi-layered and sweet. I believe it bagged numerous recognitions in its homeland when the awards season came. Mario resembles a young Francis Magalona while his father in the movie looks like an older Baron Gaysler (Did I spell it right?) and the sister is so Maja Salvador-ish. The scene wherein Mario’s character helps out his mom decorate the Christmas tree is talaga namang nakakaiyak. Follow the subtitles and “read between the lines” and you’ll know what I mean. The ending is unconventional- it is neither tragic nor happy but at least it was realistic given their age in the story. I’m really glad that I was able to catch in on video long before it was shown in CineManila. Loved it! Speaking of gay-themed films, it was only a few weeks back when I was able to watch Happy Together (not the kris aquino-eric quizon starrer! eww.). It’s directed by Wong Kar Wai in 1997 and stars the very appealing (as far as I’m concerned) Tony Leung. One need not be in numerous relationships to be able to relate to the story and declare it so REAL. The movie is bittersweet and sad for the most part but is so positively reassuring in the end. I think its the best gay love story movie ever. Actually, gay or not, it’s by far one of the best and most real films about love.

very, very good movie.
it all boils down to the choices we make in our lives. tong chose not to get involved with a situation (relationship with mew) which he knows would make his, especially his family’s, life.
i love the question Mew threw at Tong during Tong’s stay in his house. The one about fear in love and in losing the one we love.

Love of siam is such a beautiful movie. Although Mario is cute.. I really like the other thai actor Witwisit aka P-chy. Watch ko lagi ang theme song nila sa Youtube. Nakaka in love sobra ang meaning ng kanta. Next time I will go to BKK baka hanapin ko ang gig nya at watch talaga ako kesehodang ala akong maintidihan.. ha ha ha..

i’m watching it again (like for the 11th time already).
i get kilig talaga especially when Mew sang this new song at Tang/June’s party and when he sang the line “we’ll be together,forever”, and gestured and smiled at Tong, and then Tong threw a very innocent and pa-cute smile bact at Mew. OMG. super giidy feeling. Haha. It’s amazing how amidst all heavy romantic films, a film as simple as The Love of Siam could make me believe that indeed, real and innocent love exists.

you should really thank the people of cinemanila for bringing this very nice movie here in manila. subtitles are not done by the organizers, you should know that.
i just hope that you also watch local films after watching love of siam. there are also a lot of great foreign movies you won’t see on a regular run.

anyway, if Cinemanila dint do the subs then ok. But it is still their freaking job to check the accuracy of the subs, bcoz at the end of the day sila parin masisisi ng tao kpag hindi tama ung pinalabas nila. after all, sila nman ung nagpa film fest dba? alangan nman ang sisihin ko sa maling subs eh ang gobyerno? i pointed the blame to cinemanila kasi they are responsible for the product they are offering.
credibility nila nakataya sa mga inooffer nilang movie. eh kung hindi pla tama ung mga subs na nsa mga foreign movies na inooffer nila eh d wag nlang sila magpa filmfest. job nila un to provide quality films, pro kung hindi accurate eh di wag nlang.

fyi, i’ve seen a lot of foreign movies and it’s not always 100% accurate. it’s not right that you blame the organizers, it’s not that easy to organize a film festival. dapat magpasalamat ka sa kanila dahil napanuod mo yung ‘love of siam’ at hindi kung anu-ano sinasabi mo. bukod sa LOS, my iba ka pa bang pinanuod sa festival? i bet wala kasi hindi na kaya ng brain mo intindihin hahaha

Masgwapo nga siguro si Mario but I’m more attracted to Witwisit kasi nakakainlove yung character niya.
Kahapon ko lang napanood yung Love of Siam (director’s cut yung napanood ko). Last time I took the bus, di ko mapigilang umiyak nang umiyak while thinking of that movie. Definitely one of the best films I’ve watched.
Gusto ko tuloy bumili ng soundtrack ng LOS at ng album ng August (the band actually exists).

omg, i’ve seen the movie 20 times. i cried. i couldn’t stop watching the movie. too great, hurt me alot and gave me the feeling that i can’t find my ‘tong’ [char] and to accept the fact that no matter how you love it won’t last [ in my opinion, im only 16 and lonely, sad. sometimes i wonder why my other gay friends have boyfriends and i dont have any, in fact im prettier than my friends or maybe its because im a LADYBOY? or is it because im looking for a guy whose straight and not bi. due to loneliness and sadness, i always cover up what i feel inside by makin myself busy ] i love the movie, the actors [ especially mario maurer. (duh) ] ill promise to myself that when i reach the age of 20 ill be a transgender and change everthing from head to toe. ill show them how it feels to be in pain, ill make them fall for me and dump them.

I loved this movie. At the same time nainis ako sa ending but that’s just me. Well, buti na lang at walang namatay sa kuwento. It’s also refreshing to see a pink film that has no frontal nudity, garapal na sex at kung anu-anong usual na napapanood mo sa mga Pinoy pink films na nagpapanggap na indie pero actually papuntang soft porn na.
A perfect date movie for badings! Magaling si Chookiat, in fairness.

i watch this movie in abroad, this can not consider totally a gay movie, part of growing up to those adolesence. but the movie touches me is the old songs which played on the last part his partner trying to look the meaning of the songs its already 60 yeaars old song, the singer already 82 years old. a korea gay movie, love no regret will release in my country 2009 jan. i hope it will be a nice movie like i have watch lalake sa parola, taiwan 17, hongkong a gay film all in my memories, i wishes we our gay watch the movie is not watching the sexy part its an art. the movie giving us good moral lessons

hay gosh… after watching the movie, nadepress ako… not because of the story, but because of Mario… kasi bigla akong na-obsessed sa kanya and knowing that he’s a thai means na almost zero ang possibility na makita ko siya in person and the fact that he’s straight means untouchable siya ng mga guys… thankfully, i’m getting out of that depression little by little pero fan pa rin niya ako…
nabasa ko sa net na may gagawing sequel ng TLoS. returning cast din sila… sana ganito naman ang maging storyline:
tong and mew continues to be best of friends. one day, mew gets attracted to a handsome guy (bahala na kung fan siya, classmate, or just a plain stranger.) mew gathers enough courage to get to know the guy (if mew doesn’t know the guy) and to ask him out. mew and the guy then dates for several times. tong, on the other hand, sees mew with the guy dating and feels uneasy. tong would just shrug that feeling off until he realizes that he is jealous of mew and the guy. and so, tong would set out in order to win back mew…

witwisit has filipino blood from his mother’s side. mario, on the other hand, has a half-brother on him mother who is half-thai half-filipino and is based in manila.

ano nga ba yung meaning nung missing nose at ang pagkakareplace nito years after?
remember nung sinabi ni sunee (tong’s mom) na kinompronta niya si mew dahil sa nasaksihan niya sa garden nila? di ba after magwalk-out ni tong, nagsalita si june about kung bakit siya nakikialam sa buhay ng anak niya or something like that? does that mean na napaisip si sunee dahil dito at naisip niya na hahayaan na lang niya si tong na magdecide para sa sarili niya at di siya hahadlang? (remember the christmas tree scene where sunee let tong choose whatever decoration he like to put on the tree?)
