Dose: Disturbing, Very Disturbing.

When I watched Joel Lamangan’s premiere showing of “Walang Kawala” at UP Film Institute last week, there was a film trailer that was shown prior to the main feature. It was entitled “Dose.” I’d say it’s the most disturbing film trailer I’ve ever seen in my life. Here’s why — an excerpt on a feature article on the movie Dose.

One of the much-awaited entries in the forthcoming Cinema One Originals digital film fest is Dose, which promises to stir a lot of controversies. This movie marks Senedy Que’s directorial film debut after being a screenplay writer of several films, the latest of which is I.T.A.L.Y. (I Trust and Love You).

“Ang pinaka-theme naman ng movie, tipong love knows no gender,” sabi pa ni Senedy Que.

Patuloy niya, “Sa point of view ito ng isang bata, isang dose-anyos na lalaki, na pinagpakitaan ng maganda at ina-appreciate niya ‘yun, without differentiating kung bawal ito o hindi.

“Doon naman nagkaka-conflict, kasi, sa society natin, bawal ang ganoong relasyon,” kuwento pa ni Direk tungkol sa pelikula.

Itinatampok sa pelikulang isinulat din ni Senedy ang Cinemalaya Best Supporting Actor winner na si Yul Servo bilang hardinerong nagkaroon ng kaugnayan sa isang batang lalaki na ginagampanan ni Fritz Chavez. Kapag tumanda na ang bata na ito, ang Urian Best Supporting Actor winner naman na si Emilio Garcia ang nagbigay-buhay sa role.

“Very disturbing ang effect ng pelikula ‘pag napanood,” sabi pa ni Sen. “And yet, we don’t show anything. Everything just goes inside your mind. Maraming nangyayari na wala naman akong actually ipinapakita.

“It tests how dirty your mind is and how wild your imagination is. Minor ang bida rito kasi, kaya mahirap magpakita ng actual na nangyayari, lalo na sexually, between a minor and Yul Servo.

“I have to use a lot of creative ways. Ang gusto kong effect, yung makita ng mga manonood at masakyan nila kung ano ang nangyayari sa pagitan ng bata at ng hardinero. Hindi naman victim ang bata rito dahil nahulog ang loob niya roon sa gardener in an untraditional way,” patuloy ni Sen sa iba pang detalye. [Source: PEP]

    Addendum: one of the most common defenses of child molesters in criminal cases is consent (nagustuhan, gusto rin, siya ang nauna) THIS IS NOT A DEFENSE THAT WOULD GET THE OFFENDER OFF IN A STATUTORY RAPE CASE or a child abuse case. The mere fact that a child is a minor – gusto nagustuhan, nauna or not – is not a defense under the law because under the eyes of the law, the minor child knows no better. You go to prison even if you could prove that the minor wanted it as much.

    Legally, this is child abuse and RAPE, statutory rape. Under the child abuse law, the mere presence of an adult and an unrelated minor in the same room is prima facie evidence of child abuse. What the film portrays is more than this legal threshold. This is also, plainly, pedophilia. Why does the UP Film Center use its protection, under academic freedom, to allow the exhibition of scenes which, bcause the behaviour is plainly criminal cannot be allowed outside the confines of the University?

    As if homosexuals do not have enough things to worry about, some quarters had to portray gays as child abusers as well. I think that’s totally unfair because homosexuality and pedophilia are entirely different things. Any homosexual sex is BETWEEN CONSENTING ADULTS of the same sex and many gays WON’T even dream of touching minors in a sexual manner at all. 

    Trying to pass off this pedophiliac fantasy as a queer film (”Ang pinaka-theme naman ng movie is tipong love knows no gender”) is a contemptuous and despicable marketing gimmick that reeks of intellectual dishonesty (to say the least). My liberal instincts tell me to reserve my judgment but the press release in PEP is totally inexcusable.

    Saw “L.I.E.” as well, magaling na film nga, very depressing nga lang. And I think mas claro ‘tong naka-point sa pedophilia. Etong “Dose” looks vague pa at seems na mas blurry ang victim-predator line. The argument when it comes to that though, of course, is that regardless of who seduced who, the adult is the predator because he’s older and the young one, regardless of how mature beyond his years he is, is the victim kasi ‘di pa supposedly fully developed ang pag-iisip (of course meron ding adults who are like that). Mukha yatang it’s more common in real life ‘to, yung underage having sex with older guys. Thankfully, I’m not one of ‘em, whether as a child or adult. Anyone care to do an informal survey? YES for may experience with that, NO, otherwise. Ako, like I said, NO.

    nah. parang i’ve seen that plot before. doesn’t interest me anymore. try nyo panoorin yung movie na L.I.E., parang ganyan din yung theme. basta watchnyo na lang, poignant, nakaka-touch.

    Disturbing? I don’t think so. It happens in real life, and these things make us into the person that we are right now. What’s more disturbing is the fact that these things have been happening for decades and yet no one was brave enough to acknowledge it until now.

    this is reality. it may be disturbing but the society must know that this is happening. I have two friends who have in the same way encountered this kind of story. the other is at the early age of 8. hindi ko rin masabi na child molestation ang nangyari kasi nagustuhan talaga ng dalawa kong friend at hinahanap hanap na nila.

    Ang galing ni Yul Servo! Hardinerong-hardinero! I heart him. Ha, ha. “For a Lost Soldier” is Dutch yata. Never heard of it when it supposedly came out sa States so it’s not as accepted in the mainstream as it’s touted. The myth is that the U.S. is more tolerant of gays pero hindi naman, in some aspects mas accepting ang mga Pinoy pero meron ding aspects na mas accepting ang U.S. There are so many parts of the States that’s so backward socio-culturally, even worse. Eto na lang, let’s do the ultimate battle of gay films, the most popular gay film in recent memory: “Maximo Oliveros” sa Pinas vs. “Brokeback Mountain” in the US. O, claro ang sagot in this case, ‘di ba?

    Disturbing… pero films should echo realities in life such as themes like this. Naloka ako sa request ni Allen. Gawin ba namang G4M ang MGG? Wahahaha. Pero seriously Migs, why don’t you setup a romantic classifieds section somewhere on your blog to accomodate requests like Allen’s?

    Is there anyone out there who needs to be loved?
     
    I have been thinking a lot lately about how important it is for a person to have someone to love.
