The Bakla Review (TBR), the undisputed expert in Philippine gay film criticism, says of the movie “Dose” –

There’s no nudity, and a “penetration” consummates only towards the end, but Dose is a decidedly sexual journey. It’s the story of a boy’s coming of age, yet the genius of the movie is that it acknowledges the boy’s sexuality as something to be anticipated and inevitable, a thing of the future, but also a tactile presence, already happening… I found it touching, funny, sad, and exhilarating. This is a gay coming of age that’s deeper, braver, edgier than Ang Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros (The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros) or Ang Lihim Ni Antonio (Antonio’s Secret).

TBR says more here (a full review), and then in the end gives the film an “A” rating. I missed the movie when it was shown last year, but here’s good news from Senedy Que, the director of “Dose”:

  8. I’m on the phase of wanting to watch all queer flicks i get hold of to..I started to watch gay-themed movies about last month ago. Before BBM was the only lgbt film that I had ever seen. And yeah as a torrential wave brought me to a pirate’s bay, I had been familiar enough to foreign gay films but I would like to see how the issues are tackled in a Filipino setting..So I’m looking forward to this one..and Direk’s a fan of Cidade De Deus. That’s a great and inspiring film. If the other’s have time to watch it, then put it on your to-do list!

  12. …tale about love, lust, and loss of innocence.. LOSS OF INNOCENCE? Its Pedophilia and child rape. In any language, under any circumstance, you seduce a kid, its wrong. ITS NOT SEXY. And I think its irresponsible for the filmmakers to tackle such just to be provocative..

  16. LEO: i agree that most of the gay indie films end sad… Bakit kaya? Take for example MGA PARU-PARONG ROSAS (my favorite), WALANG KAWALA and LIHIM NI KURDAPYA. They all end in tragic deaths. Hahay….

  18. This is just baaad. I cannot believe they allowed this to be shown. Im sorry the movie was great – yes but the message it brings is just very inappropriate. MEN SHOULDN’T GET BOYS PERIOD. PEDOPHILIA is a serious crime and more importantly, it is a moral issue.
