In a venue where one is judged at face-value, I guess this adage doesn’t apply: Never judge a book by its cover.

During the recent Miss Universe (2010) beauty pageant, the world was enthralled by the grace, elegance and worldly sophistication of the statuesque and dusky Filipina, Venus Raj, as she floated through the stage in a bikini and then in a shimmering gown of silver. She was breathtakingly beautiful and cover-worthy of an expensive fashion magazine. Looking at her it would be easy to assume that she breathed and lived for parties, social events, go-sees and photoshoots.

And then…Venus had to open her mouth and speak her mind. She was asked this question, “What major mistake have you made in your life and how do you plan to correct it?” To which she replied:

“You know what, Sir, in my 22 years of existence, I can say that there’s nothing major major problem that I’ve done in my life because I’m very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So thank you so much that I’m here. Thank you, thank you so much!”

That night, Venus won as 4th runner-up on stage. Off-stage, she became a loser. She became the object of jokes and remarks conveying disappointment over her 4th runner-up finish saying that if only she was smarter, she would have won the crown. Hours later, Venus emerges from the contest joking about “major, major”, saying she wouldn’t change her answer if given the chance.

Ayan, for fun lang naman, dahil alam kong lahat tayo ay tuwang-tuwa sa pagkaka-4th runner up ni Ate Venus (charing!), at ninais din nating sagutin ang tanong na siyang bumoljak sa koronang minimithi, tara at subukan. Imagine, isipin! Bilang kandidata ng Pilipinas sa Miss Universe, ikaw ang nakatayo sa entablado sa Las Vegas. Nagniningning ang kapaligiran, malakas ang palakpakan ng balana, at biglang pasok si William Baldwin, nagtanong: “What is one big mistake you’ve made, and what did you do to make it right?” Sagutin!

Kalur-quey! Watch 0:58 to 1:04 in particular. Strip gymnastics itu! At ang abs! Ho-May-Gaz!

I don’t know about you, but I believe I was born this way. And I know, I can feel it with every fiber of my being, that I came in not just being this way, but intending to be this way. I hit the ground running and here I am. And then I lived in this world that has so many wonderful things about it and I began to see among the wonderful things, things that were not quite so wonderful. And those things pained me because I want a wonderful world. Not just for myself but for others. Somehow I have never been able to separate myself from others. I care about life. I care about well-being. I care about upliftment. I want people to be joyful. I want to be joyful. So in the living of life I gave birth – I could feel it happen – to all kinds of new ideas. I have a dream about the way life can be upon this planet. I see a time where people can live among one another in a variety of personalities, in a variety of genders, in a variety of financial and sexual and all – every other kind of – orientations. This made me cry. Really. Watch.

I was at the German Embassy this morning, and as I entered the waiting room for people applying for their Schengen visas, I was silently surprised to see a fellow citizen of the blogosphere, the gay fashionista celebrity and blogger icon that is Bryanboy. He was quietly sitting down, dressed so simply yet there’s a majestic aura around him. The seats beside him were empty.

But in unconscious deference, I chose an empty seat 2 rows behind him. From where I sat I observed how black his hair was. It was cropped short but extraordinarily black and thick that you couldn’t see through to his scalp. (“Pina-kulay kaya niya ito?” I asked myself.) He wore his fashionista shades like a headband. His number was called. “Number 2, to window 4 please.” Bryanboy stood up, and I swear I saw him float his way to the counter, a black gilded handbag in tow. I heard some chuckles behind me as Bryanboy sashayed, and I turned and looked to the direction where the sound was coming from, my darting gaze ready to liquidate the crook. Fortunately he was a cute seafarer. My heart just said a little prayer of gratitude for God’s beautiful creations, and wished He teaches the crooked chuckler a lesson (nawa’y ma-in love siya sa kapwa niya seaman!).

Back to Bryanboy, I remember meeting him personally (and shaking his hand) during the 2007 Philippine Blog Awards Night at the RCBC auditorium. He was so gracious then, a tad more shy than I thought he would be. Aside from his signature handbag, he was with a uniformed yaya. Ang cute dabah. Gusto ko rin ng yaya!

Funny that some people think Bryanboy and I are rivals. Helloooo! There’s no comparison naman between MGG and Bryanboy. Pareho lang kaming bakla, yun lang. I was even asked one time, “what do you think of Bryanboy?” Aba, nangangamoy issue. Let me answer the question here. I think Bryanboy is such a funny guy. He obviously loves what he is doing and I only have admiration for passionate people like him. Charoooz! Seriously, I love Bryanboy’s witty lines, especially this: “I’m so gay I sweat glitters!” Panalo dabah!

O yun lang mga kapatid, nag-share lang ako ng celebrity sighting ko this morning. Go forth and be gay, just like Bryanboy, sweat glitters — and share your glimmers to the world. World Peace!

(From Yahoo/PhilStar) The “intimate scene” between Luis Manzano and John Lloyd Cruz as lovers in Star Cinema’s In My Life was finally shot last week on the Brooklyn Bridge, with the breathtaking Manhattan skyline as backdrop.

“Feel na feel nila ‘yung eksena,” reported Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre (of The Filipino Reporter), “very realistic, which simply means that Luis and John Lloyd are good actors because, as everybody knows, pareho silang straight.”

The movie, directed by Olive Lamasan and also starring Vilma Santos (Luis’ mom playing his mom), is Luis’ most challenging. But whether or not he will finally join the ranks of John Lloyd, Piolo Pascual, Jericho Rosales, Sam Milby, Richard Gutierrez and Dingdong Dantes as big-screen leading men will be known when the film hits the theaters in September.
