I guess it won’t be too much to say that MGG the blog is a popular blog. It rakes in as much as 40,000 page views per day, with readership from all around the globe. Yet, not everyone is connected to the internet. Many have yet to enjoy the liberating power of the world wide web, especially to folks of our kind, people like us. That is why, when a book publisher approached me, floating the idea of publishing the best of MGG’s blog posts as a book, it wasn’t such a hard decision. This morning, the publisher and I personally met and agreed to put together the project, and within the next few months, you’ll all witness the launch of Migs the Manila Gay Guy’s compilation of the blog’s best posts in book form. I have been very clear to the publisher that I will not receive a single centavo for this project — all book royalties will be donated to my favorite orphanage in Manila. The book will, for me, serve as an extension of its original online form so that more people can have access to the wonderful content that you (my dear MGG community) and I have put together in this humble online abode.

Through this project I hope to be able to touch more lives, and to make them feel that they are not alone in their ups and downs. This for me is a beautiful incarnation of the ever-elusive World Peace. Exciting times ahead!

P.S. Do you have suggestions for the book? Any particular content I should include? I’m open to suggestions!

Louie Mar Gangcuangco, the author

From the author, Louie Mar Gangcuangco: I wrote the story two years ago, when I was just seventeen. What inspired me to write the novel? It’s a monosyllabic word many people fail to understand – love.

This is a tough confession. At sixteen, I have been splurging my extra cash inside Malate’s premiere gay places. For more than half a year, I have had whirlwind love affairs that most lasted for barely two weeks. But things changed when I met him.

We met at Bath. Ooh… I still remember how gorgeous he was. His eyes were hazelbrown. The way he looked at me was tempting. His physique was really sexy. But what hit me was his personality. His was unique. His was matchless wit. Best of all… He knows how to speak French.

I loved him with all my heart. Twice we went out on dates that went more than the casual chitchat and dinner. We ate a lot. So much that even our souls took part in the banquet. I sacrificed so much for him, but after he grew tired of my youth, all he did was to brand me a “nuisance.

That December afternoon, I cried over the phone, telling him how rude it was of him to treat me like trash. We met and he apologized. But the pain he caused me made me sit in front of my laptop. And words kept flowing on and on. The keyboard ticked… lagatakatak… for three long months until the third draft of the then-called “Orosa-Nakpil, Malate: Isang Kasaysayan ng Pag-Ibig, was created.
Nine months seem like batting an eyelash. “Orosa-Nakpil, Malate:Isang Kasaysayan ng Pag-ibig matured into “Orosa-Nakpil,Malate Pagkagat ng Dilim and is finally released with a shorter title, “Orosa-Nakpil, Malate.

“Orosa-Nakpil, Malate was evaluated by Dr. Jaime Galvez Tan, the former Secretary of Health; Dr. Valenzuela from PGH; Prof Leano from UP College of Medicine; and Dr. Destura from the National Institues of Health.

* * *

“Orosa-Nakpil, Malate: The Uncut Filipino Version” is written by the 22-year-old novelist, Louie Mar Gangcuangco. It became a National Book Store Best Seller in 2007 when Louie Mar was just 19. This October, the English Version of the critically-acclaimed novel is released nationwide and is set to conquer the International scene by 2010.

Orosa-Nakpil, Malate is a story of a young medical student who got addicted to the sexual pleasures of Manila’s gay district — Orosa-Nakpil, Malate.

Find out for yourself why this book is multi-sector endorsed and why it garnered awards from Y Speak, UP College of Medicine, & Sentro ng Wikang Filipino.
Browse through the pages and discover why it is endorsed by Direk Joey Reyes, Dr Jaime Galvez Tan (former DOH Secretary), and the Dr. Destura of the National Institutes of Health.

Judge for yourself why Orosa-Nakpil, Malate has gained the merit of being featured in Sharon, Y Speak, & Full Time Mom despite the explicit man to man sex scenes in the book.

Dear Migs,

I’m a member of MGG for more than 5 yrs. now and I’ve read so many good articles, subjects and suggestions from our fellow members and mind you, they are all interesting, informative and some are mind-boggling.

Why not compile those articles into a book, lalo na yung mga humihingi sa iyo ng payo pag may hinala sila sa kanilang mga lalake. It could be a good reference book not only for the academia but also for those nalilito at hindi na alam ang dapat gawin.

I could lend a hand in clerical jobs. I’m presently working here in Saudi as a sexy-tary.

Good Luck & God Bless!

Pat3zia

* * *

Dear Kapatid na Pat3zia,

Mabuhay!

I’m sure naman na with all good intentions.

Any suggestions?

Boom-chaka-lak!

I’m in California. As the clock struck 6 PM, I left the hotel where I’m checked in to do some walking. I thought it’ll do me good after that long-haul flight from Manila. The temperature was just right, cool and breezy, and while the beach wasn’t all that pretty, some of its visitors were. I noticed two beautiful latino boys playing ball. They must be in their late teens.

Walking along the beach, I passed where they were at, and the shorter but meatier one took notice of me. He smiled. I thought I smiled back, but after a while I realized what I gave him was more of a smirk. I walked past them, and after another hundred or so meters, I decided to walk back. I settled on one of the wooden benches, faced the beach, and enjoyed watching the two boys play.

After another half hour, both boys walked nearer to where I was and started cleaning themselves up. I managed to snap some stolen shots.

They stayed there for another 15 minutes, just chatting with each other. I almost mustered the courage to approach but I was too torpe. (Di na ako sanay lumandi, hehe!)

I ended up reading my book instead.

What’s the moral of the story? :p

From artist-blogger friend, Palma Tayona:

we have a short-story writing competition for children and there’s still a month left to submit entries. i read through some of those who write you and it can easily be seen that some of them do have a good grasp of story telling. they have what is called the gift of gab. i just wonder though if they can actually translate this gift of writing about themselves to writing for others, specifically children.

now why am i telling you, someone who advances the cause of gay people, about this? contemporary literature is moved these days by liberal thoughts and ideas. many current issues and relevant topics are slowly being written about today in stories that children can absorb and help them relate towards the bigger and real world, the same kind of topics that were only spoken of in whispers a few decades ago. for example, i was reading through a children’s book written by Augie Rivera entitled “ANG LIHIM NI LEA”. it is about a very sensitive topic – incest. it is highly relevant and about time that someone wrote about it for the specific audience – our children – that must guard itself against. the book is well-crafted, beautifull illustrated and very well written. you can see it online here.

i have seen and read so many good stories written for children and yet i still have to see something about being different and being okay with it. i just wonder, how an excellent gay writer would write a story for children.

Interested to join the contest? Mechanics here.

Another reference to that book, “Now That You Know.” If your parents are fond of reading books, this might just be useful.

If the coming out process is difficult for gay people, it is often equally difficult for their parents. Confusion, anger, and fear frequently cause fathers and mothers of gay men and lesbians to disavow, strike out against, and even resent their children. For many parents, a child’s coming out feels like the ultimate rejection–not only of their dreams and hopes but of their own heterosexuality. In Now That You Know: A Parent’s Guide to Understanding Their Gay and Lesbian Children, Betty Fairchild and Nancy Hayward–the mothers of, respectively, a gay man and a lesbian–have charted the rough seas that almost every parent of a gay person travels.

Fairchild and Hayward presume that homosexuality is a positive good, and that it is willful ignorance and homophobia that are moral wrongs. They also believe that families can and should love all members and that it is distraught or confused parents (not their gay offspring) who must change. Mixing common sense with a firm sense of social justice and love, the authors systematically address almost all of the problems faced by parents of gay people. Answering questions on religion, AIDS, health, children, alternative families, and sex, they make the complicated gay world–often a nightmare vision for “just out” parents of gays–not only manageable but happy and nurturing. –Michael Bronski (Amazon.com Review)

I’m an impulsive buyer, I admit it. Take this for example: I was meaning to buy one of those UMPCs (Ultra-Mobile PCs, those super cheap laptops), justifying to myself that it’s sub-20k (read: dirt cheap for a laptop), and very handy, very mobile, so I can blog anywhere I want.

I shopped around, canvassed, and went home with a MacBook. Hahaha!

Then this other example: I was waiting for a friend at Festival SuperMall one day when I chanced upon this shiny new black cellphone: My Phone T22 Duo. The attraction was about it being Dual SIM — both active at the same time! I thought, it’s a great buy (less than 10k), and I can have 2 SIM cards active at the same time without lugging around 2 separate cellphones. In short, I bought one and I’m using it right this moment.

How do I find it? Is it a worthy buy? Do I recommend you gay gadgeteers to follow my example? (Haha!) Read on.

The Good

First, the phone is built surprisingly solid. It being “brand-less” (My Phone — wtf?) I was expecting a wishy-washy build. But no! It is shiny, shimmering, and solid out of the box (and a bit heavy in my opinion). The buttons aren’t flimsy, even the stainless lining on the sides are pretty well laid in that it doesn’t show icky gaps with the rest of the black matte body. Same goes with the back panel that goes off when you insert the SIM or remove the battery.

Second, it comes with 2 batteries! (I was actually suprised!) It’s my first cellphone that came with an extra battery, free-of-charge.

Third, it’s touch screen. And the stylus has a pretty neat compartment at the bottom-right corner at the back of the phone. Neat.

Fourth, the memory is expandable via a T-Flash memory card. Only with this phone did I discover that T-Flash is the same as MicroSD. Since I had a MicroSD from an old Moto phone, I was able to resurrect it with this phone.

The Not-So-Good

I actually just have one not-so-good thing to say about this cellphone. Its user interface (UI).

It’s quite difficult for me to navigate the menu. While the 2 SIMs have separate SMS inbox, it’s pretty confusing when replying. There were several times I accidentally replied to an SMS received by SIM2 using my SIM1 number. Not good at all.

And because cellphone use is so part of our lives, UI is one the most important things to consider in buying a phone.

My verdict? Look elsewhere.
