Searing Pain, Shining Hope

Issues, Migs Speaks 18 comments

While the world is rejoicing with the victory of Barack Obama, the first US President of African-American descent, I was silently monitoring the gay-related Ballot Measures. In Arizona, Proposition 102 (Ban on Gay Marriage) was being decided on. The measure would amend the state constitution so that only a union between one man and one woman would be valid or recognized as a marriage in the state. In California, a similar measure was also being decided on, called Proposition 8. In Florida too, there was something similar, Amendment 2. All these states were voting Yes or No to Ban Gay Marriage. In all these three states, as of writing, the Yes’s are winning. In Arkansas, people were voting Yes or No to another gay-related issue: Arkansas Initiative 1– Ban on Gay Couples Adopting Children. Again, the Yes’s are winning. (more…)

A little note to all my readers

Migs Speaks 15 comments

Anyone can be anyone if he so chooses, as long as he owns up to his choices, and takes responsibility for them. I do not believe in being just completely black, or completely white. I like the rainbow — it has so many colors, in fact the whole spectrum — it is beautiful and yet it does not have to be just one color. One thing I like about the community that has gathered around MGG is that it allows for different views among its members. There are certain things I strongly believe in, yet even as the blog owner I do not feel the need to impose; I do not feel that my strong beliefs should be anyone else’s strong belief as well. Thank you all for your openness and understanding.

Happy 2nd!

Migs Speaks 42 comments

Today, MGG turns two years old!

TWO is such a small number, but for MGG, TWO means…
… 1,085 total posts
… 30,700 total comments
… 1,000,000+ page loads per month*
… 191,000+ unique visitors per month*
… #1 Community / Groups blog (Philippine Top Blogs)
… #17 in Top Philippine Blogs according to Alexa (August 2008, published by PMT)

but really, for me, the following numbers are more important:

For MGG, TWO is ONE – unity in diversity! Despite the differences, world peace pa rin!
For MGG, TWO is INFINITY — because the love you dear readers have showered on MGG is priceless! Thanks to all who sent it their greetings — some coming all the way from America and Africa! Salamat, salamat! (Text messages after the jump.)

Celebration of Masculine Pulchritude

Migs Speaks 14 comments

man.gif Getting pretty bored recently, one proof of which is my current hair-do — which is hair-none. Yes dears, Migs the Manila Gay Guy is sporting a semikal look now. A friend was saying “kulang na lang tattoo, mukha ka ng sanggano!” Hahaha, kung alam lang niya, sanggano ang hanap ko. Anyway, one other effect of this summer boredom is a crazy idea, a crazy attempt to make this site a little bit more exciting.

Search for Amateur Hunks and Cuties

I thought, maybe I can feature more AMATEUR hunks and cuties here. So here’s what I propose to all of you MGG readers: we shall run an online search for hot Filipino men, preferably amateurs, those who have not really been out there in the limelight. I am willing to give away some nifty prizes to those who win. Here are the mechanics.

Hillary and Gay Acceptance

Issues, Personalities 40 comments

While I’m not necessarily a Hillary Clinton fan (I know her too little to say I’m a fan), I found something she said about the gay community pretty encouraging. Talking about the high rate of suicide among American gay teens, she said:

It’s such a serious problem… I’m well aware of the depression and anxiety, and frankly the high rate of suicide comparatively among gay teens. First, number one we’ve got to do everything we can to send a clear message that we value you. We value you as a person, you as a total person and we want you to feel accepted and respected in your community … There need to be more services. Sometimes it’s difficult in school and there’s not a lot of understanding and sensitivity. We’ve got to do more to help prepare school officials and, frankly, your peers in school. Just because somebody doesn’t understand doesn’t mean they should be a bully. They need to really be taught and guided to be more accepting and that is something that I feel very strongly about…We need more health services. We need more mentoring and assistance so that you don’t feel so alone…

We do not need to wait for the time when lives are lost because of gender-related violence. While I believe Pinoys are really more accepting, I also know that gender discrimination exists here, it is real. (In fact, this blog receives at least a couple of really insensitive gay bashing comments every week, e.g. “Sa impyerno ang bagsak ninyong mga bakla!”) May we all, including straight folks, learn to be more respectful of diversity, that regardless of gender and sexual preference people learn to live with each other side-by-side, if not lovingly, at least constructively.

Do you have ideas what we can do to practice this acceptance in our daily life? Do share your thoughts here.

What Makes You Tick?

Migs Speaks 28 comments

dsc00158.jpg I was in Los Angeles, California recently. (Yup, it was a business trip.) Stayed in a grand suite fit for royalty in one of the most expensive hotels in the area, and for the whole duration of my stay had a limo and personal chauffeur at my beck and call. Every night, the hotel manager attempted to impress me by sending in complimentary VIP accouterments to my suite: flowers and fruits one time, red wine on another, chocolates and fine candies on yet another, etc. I dined and wined with executives of a number of top multinational companies in the US, so that meant nothing less than chef-prepared, fine gourmet stuff. All luxury, fancy and fabulous.

Diversity in the Gay Community – 2

Issues, Podcasts 1 comment

gaydiversity.jpg

Is there such a thing as “gay lifestyle”? Its supposed elements — Malate party-going, pill-popping, s*x-partner-swapping, moviehouse-hopping,… are these part of every Manila gay guy’s life? Are gays really deceitful, they buy s*x, they are gossip-mongers, promiscuous, and deep inside: LONELY, pathetic fags?

Listen in, as we end this anniversary special podcast on Diversity in the Gay Community. The audio after the jump!

It’s Raining (Str8acting Gay) Men!

Gay Confusion, Love and Dating 73 comments

piolo.jpg

First it was Gus, the gay man who has a wife who doesn’t know, 2 beautiful daughters, and one gay querida boyfriend…

Then the guy whom I burned phone lines with… the same one who dedicated the song “You Give Me Something.”

Then the other guy (friends with Gus) who I slept with one Friday night, only to find out the following Tuesday that he was married (I saw them together in Baclaran!)

All these happened within a span of just 1 month. Now fate has it for me to be dating Zander, another straight-acting, confused, gay man.

On the one hand, I tell myself, “feeling beauty queen ka ha! Ang haba ng hair!” But thinking about it more, I feel I am just wasting my precious, precious time as a single gay man. But that is not the point I wanted to make.

Year-end Reflection

As the year 2006 comes to a close, I would like to share with you some of the thoughts that come to mind, which for me are points to ponder, material for further reflection, and sort of a year-end summary of lessons from this university called Life. (more…)
