Dose: Disturbing, Very Disturbing.

Movies and Music 21 comments

When I watched Joel Lamangan’s premiere showing of “Walang Kawala” at UP Film Institute last week, there was a film trailer that was shown prior to the main feature. It was entitled “Dose.” I’d say it’s the most disturbing film trailer I’ve ever seen in my life. Here’s why — an excerpt on a feature article on the movie Dose.

One of the much-awaited entries in the forthcoming Cinema One Originals digital film fest is Dose, which promises to stir a lot of controversies. This movie marks Senedy Que’s directorial film debut after being a screenplay writer of several films, the latest of which is I.T.A.L.Y. (I Trust and Love You).

“Ang pinaka-theme naman ng movie, tipong love knows no gender,” sabi pa ni Senedy Que.

Quicktrip by Cris Pablo

Movies and Music 9 comments

When it comes to intelligent movie reviews with a gay slant, I leave it to The Bakla Review (TBR). He gives the movie an A-minus rating, which for me says I got to watch the movie. (And I thought I won’t ever watch a Cris Pablo movie again after surviving that harrowing “SEB: Cybergame of Love” movie he premiered at Cinemalaya.) Here’s what TBR has to say about Cris Pablo’s Quicktrip (formerly entitled “Quickie”):

The scenes are breezy, observant, and direct, some of the best in Pablo’s ouvre, or in any of the gay movies this year, with brisk editing and the wistfulness of Isha’s minimalist music. There’s not much actual sex or nudity, but the director’s original cut (one you can’t see in commercial theaters) includes an onscreen cumsh*t by Andro Morgan. Seemingly simple, with a soulful core, Quicktrip has magic.

The Thank You Girls

Fun, Movies and Music 13 comments

Not all gay movies need to have skin and sex. Here’s a gay movie that attempts to bust the stereotype — watch its premier on Thursday, 28 August 2008 at the UP Cine Adarna (formerly UP Film Center), 6:30 pm. Written and Directed by Charliebebs Gohetia.

* * *

“The ‘Thank You’ Girls” is a Visayan film with a gay lingo twist.

Tired of losing in all the beauty competitions in Davao City, five dysfunctional gay beauty pageant veterans decide to travel north to Cagayan de Oro City, in the island of Mindanao.

Their mission: to conquer the grandest competition of beauty, personality and brains in the whole province.

They believe that being city dwellers, gays in the province will never stand a chance against them.

Nang Tigasan ang Tigasin

Gay Confusion, Issues 15 comments

Here’s an interesting experiment involving two groups of straight men: Group 1 is composed of men who bash gay men, mga tigasing galit sa bading. Group 2 is composed of men who are cool with gay men, keri lang sa kanila ang mga bading. Both groups were made to watch M2M (man-to-man) porn, and their putotoy’s reactions measured and recorded. Whose putotoys reacted more — guys from Group 1, or those from Group 2? Interested to know the results? Well then head on to the blog of Lex Bonife, famous writer of gay movies “Ang Lalake sa Parola,” “Ang Lihim ni Antonio,” and “Kambyo.”

Gay Indie Films Galore

Movies and Music 30 comments

Gone are the days when gay men figure in movies only as comic relief, thanks to the very vibrant indie film community. I remember this trend start some years back when Cris Pablo dared to produce “Duda/Doubt.” Since then a good number of non-conventional gay movies have been produced (some good, some not so — but that’s fine; I’ll give them all an “A” for effort). In fact in the coming days, there will be 3 indie films, all gay-themed, that will be shown. Nood tayo!

1. RoXXXanne by Jun Lana (writer/director)

roxanneposter.jpg

Starring Jay Aquitania, Janvier Daily, and Sheree. Opens on February 2, 2008, Saturday, at Robinson’s Galleria IndieSine (will run for 10 days, then will tour to Robinson’s Place in Ermita, Cebu, etc.)

Big Eden: Lovely, Romantic, Gay

Movies and Music 3 comments

At first I didn’t want to watch this movie because the protagonist gay man was not cute enough. But then one lazy day, with nothing elso to do, I watched it — and was so very glad I did. One of my favorite gay movies. Probably next to Bishonen.

Twilight Dancers, coming soon

Movies and Music 5 comments

Twilight Dancers

Another “macho dancer” movie coming soon! It is Twilight Dancers, megged by Mel Chionglo. “Actually, the film is not a gay movie.” says Chionglo. “Films on macho dancers were never gay movies in the sense that the issues tackled were not always on gays…this film about macho dancers is situated in a political and social environment,” the director said.

Publicities abound about Tyron Perez’ 1-minute torrid m2m kissing scene with William Martinez. When asked about how it felt french kissing another man, Tyron just said, “okay” and “enjoy.” Hmmmm… Tyron also has a quick frontal nudity scene while dancing on stage (he plays a young macho dancer, right?), where he commented that he has no qualms showing off because he has something to be proud of. Well, we’ll see.
