LGBT Filipinos Dare, Care and March with Pride in 2009
(Official PR for the Dec. 5, 2009 Manila Pride March)

Once again, the Filipino Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community along with their friends, families, allies and supporters, will come together in one massive and colorful parade at the 2009 Manila Pride March. On the first Saturday of December, right in time for Human Rights week, LGBT Filipinos will come out in full-force not only to show their pride but also to stake their claim on their right to participate fully in civil, political, economic, cultural and social life in the Philippines and beyond.

The theme of this year’s Pride Parade is “We Dare. We Care” to signify the LGBT community’s proactive stance in addressing the human rights problems affecting their sector. “We shall no longer be complacent. We dare to remind the Philippine government and the rest of society that we have an obligation under international human rights law to promote and protect the rights and well-being of all people, including LGBT Filipinos, who are being threatened by the looming economic crisis, natural disasters, armed conflict, religious intolerance and lack of political will of some government officials,” according to Great Ancheta, Head Coordinator of Task Force Pride (TFP) Philippines 2009.

While the world is rejoicing with the victory of Barack Obama, the first US President of African-American descent, I was silently monitoring the gay-related Ballot Measures. In Arizona, Proposition 102 (Ban on Gay Marriage) was being decided on. The measure would amend the state constitution so that only a union between one man and one woman would be valid or recognized as a marriage in the state. In California, a similar measure was also being decided on, called Proposition 8. In Florida too, there was something similar, Amendment 2. All these states were voting Yes or No to Ban Gay Marriage. In all these three states, as of writing, the Yes’s are winning. In Arkansas, people were voting Yes or No to another gay-related issue: Arkansas Initiative 1– Ban on Gay Couples Adopting Children. Do you remember your first pride march?

I do. I’m sure we all do. And if you haven’t had the opportunity to participate in one yet, this year’s the perfect time to do so.

This years Pride March is a tribute to our rights, our lives, our loves and our selves. It’s also the celebration of the 10 years of Filipino rainbow pride. It’s a perfect 10 for the success of the past pride marches, and the anticipated one of this year’s. Hence, the theme is A decade of dignity: our rights, our lives, our loves, our selves. (more…)

Wag nang magmaganda, wag nang magpatumpik-tumpik pa!

The LGBT community needs your help!

The organizers of the 2007 Pride March in Manila need people who can help mobilize resources and widen community participation during the march. The tasks are simple – going around organizations, bars and establishments to encourage them to join the Pride March, helping in fund-raising activities, and saturating the internet with promotion materials on the LGBT Pride March.

During the March itself, marshals are needed for crowd management. Individuals willing to stay in the booth or carry the banners are also welcome.

So if you have extra time, please consider volunteering for the Pride March. If you�re interested to help, please contact the organizers immediately.

Whether you are a butterfly of the colorful type, or a butterfly in many different forms (little and brown? hehe!), as long as you see the dignity of being yourself, and respect other people regardless of their gender then you are welcome to join the 2007 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride March on December 8, 2007 in Malate, Manila. Go na? Rachel Ann GO!

Having said and plugged that, I thought to myself, paano naman ang mga bading na di pa out? Can they join the celebration without having to out themselves? How? Does being proud about our sexuality presuppose that we should be out?

I personally don’t think so, but maybe I can ask you dear readers — how can a closeted gay man celebrate the dignity of being gay without being out?
