Gays and the Filipino Family

Issues, Migs Speaks 13 comments

In this nation of migrants, the fabric of the Filipino family has not been torn, it has been altered. It has been patched, with new designs and new colors added. It has verily become a fabric different but still the same. It has been said that the Filipinos are some of the warmest and most spontaneous people in the world. You only have to attend family reunions to see vivid examples of these.

But in these reunions, the gay uncle is quiet because he does not want to be asked when will he marry, and the lesbian aunt is busy puttering about the house, making sure everybody is fed.

These are stereotypes. Gays and lesbians in the millennium have changed, too. Some of us are into relationships with fellow gays, or with fellow lesbians. There are still those who sleep only with straight people, with dire consequences for their pockets and for their self-esteem.

Thank You, Salamat Po!

Issues, Migs Speaks 25 comments

Let me start off with this: THANK YOU, dear MGG readers. You make this site so rich with many different opinions and points of view — you make me laugh, sometimes think, at other times, feel melancholic. And it’s all good! Salamat po!

* * *

Single Brown Mommy writes:

… according to a recent survey by Reader’s Digest, Metro Manila ranks among the least courteous cities in the world, and that Manilans forget to say the words ‘thank you.’

Upon reading this, I told myself, along with World Peace, I want to take it upon myself to promote the practice of always appreciating other people. I agree, with all the negativities in this world, we tend to forget to appreciate our fellow human beings. We sometimes take our friends for granted, what more strangers? But I suggest, especially all you gay men out there, let’s role model the practice of appreciation towards others. You know how good it feels when we are appreciated, right? I believe in the saying that “if it is to be, it is up to me.” So people, if you agree that appreciating other people more often is good, then join me in this crusade! Let’s help in promoting this culture of appreciation.

* * *

To help ourselves further buy in to this kind of behavior change, let me offer you the benefits of being more appreciative:

1. Build better and healthier relationships
2. Positive energy begets positive energy!
3. You get to smile more often, thus slowing down the physical aging process
4. A pleasant (smiling!) disposition is a much better social lubricant than any alcoholic drink
5. It feels good to be appreciated — and to appreciate too!

So, mga friends, let’s do it! Say more ‘thank you’, more ’salamat’ — and believe that your positive energy will bring back more for you and for the people around you. Thank you, and World Peace!

Philippines is Mr. Gay Congeniality

Events 6 comments

Robby Tarroza, who landed in the papers last year for a major skirmish with Rudy Fernandez and Alma Moreno, ironically won for the Philippines the Mr. Congeniality title in the recently concluded Mr. Gay International in California, USA. Mr. Gay Israel won the crown with Mr. Gay USA and Mr. Gay Netherlands as runners up.

Lovely, lovely Jake Cuenca

Hunks, Miscellaneous 53 comments

Dear Jake,

Your name sounds so lovely. You know, back in high school, when I was just starting to discover my tendency to prefer boys over girls, my first crush’s name was Jake too. Jake, Jake, Jake. Your name reminds me of fresh flowers wet with dew, in a lazy humid weekend morning. Now, you are the second Jake that made my heart squirm a bit, and skip a beat.

I saw you in person one time. I was in a smoking area in GMA. And while I was puffing the magic dragon, you magically appeared right before me. While I played dead-ma, I knew then that I will never ever forget that moment. I didn’t know you smoked. But I was glad you did, and even borrowed my lighter. Oh, that was heaven.

When I look at you I feel young again. So thank you. Your images will remain etched in my mind, and I become young again.

Always,
Migs (na ume-echoz)

Jake, with such an angelic face…
