Sharing His Story Through Songs

Contribution, Letters, Love and Dating 9 comments

[This is a contribution from MGG reader named Red. Posting it here, verbatim.]

I’d like to share my own experience, though too long for the viewers’ eyes. This is something unbelievable and could make for a good script for a movie that it could even rival the story of the Brokeback Mountain. Just to find release, I’d like to see it posted in no less than Migs’ site, so that others may be enlightened or inspired, or of whatever purpose it could serve to the readers. More importantly, my story opposes that of the twink-hungry and abusive PLU (gay) teachers’ usual portrayal by the media. Let me do it by way of using Southborder’s famous songs and the songs I’d love to listen to.

Philippine Daily Inquirer, Feb, 7, 2005

DARE to struggle, dare to win … as married gays. After raiding a few Army camps, two communist guerrillas hid in a forest gorge and fell in love.

Deeply.

That was three years ago. On Friday, under a romantic drizzle in a muddy clearing in Compostela Valley province in Mindanao, Ka Andres and Ka Jose exchanged vows in a heavily guarded ceremony before local villagers, friends from the city and their comrades in arms. (more…)

The Music of Vincent de Jesus

Movies and Music, Personalities 3 comments

My gay idol Vince de Jesus is the musical mind behind the Zaturnnah songs that made me laugh and cry when I watched the musical last year. On Monday, May 12, he will be the Featured Composer in Mag:net Cafe’s (Bonifacio High Street) “Monday Nights, New Voices” performance series. Five young musical theater performers will sing select songs from de Jesus’ obra, including Himala, Zsazsa Zaturnnah ze Muzical, ASL Please, Kelly Kelly, Silent Soprano, and Skin Deep. Musical theater-goers should not miss this as real musical and acting talents (di lang pa-kyut) will be showcased. The show will be hosted by Bituin Escalante and Rem Zamora. (Entrance is Php150.) Come watch — kitakits tayo dun!

Mag:net Cafe Bonifacio High Street is at 2/F B3, Bonifacio High Street, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig Metro Manila. It’s in the building across Krispy Kreme, right beside the Nike Store.

The Rainbow Connection

I’m sure that you have at least once listened to this beautiful, beautiful song: Rainbow Connection, written by songwriters Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher for The Muppet Movie (1979). In the film, it is sung by Kermit The Frog as the Muppets set out to find adventure. The song establishes that Kermit was a thinking frog, and that he has an introspective soul. The songwriters also wanted to show that Kermit would be on this spiritual path, examining life, and the meaning of life.

While listening to Sarah Mclachlan’s version of the song, I was struck not only by the simple yet beautiful melody, but moreso by how it resonated with my gay core. Specifically, towards the end of the song, it talks about these “voices”:

Chikahan with Gay Idol Vince, pt.1

Personalities, Podcasts 33 comments

vince-podcast2.jpg

Vincent de Jesus is the lyricist, composer, and musical director of the phenomenal Filipino musical Zsazsa Zaturnnah ze muzical. (And he is also a regular MGG reader! He is the guy in pink at the rightmost of the photo above.) What I like about Vince is that while he is totally talented and multi-awarded he has remained a disciplined artist and worker; he is intelligent and witty, yet with a big, big heart (the main reason I super love Zaturnnah ze Muzical is the meaningfulness and heart of its songs). Inspiring, to say the least. The Troikasters — Gibbs, McVie, and I — thus decided to invite Vince as our guest for this podcast episode. Since Gibbs is the recognized theater expert among the Troikasters, he led the discussion, which turned out to be more of a fun conversation among gay men rather than an interview. Of course hindi nagpaawat si Mcvie, himself being once a stage actor too! So expect me to be just in the sidelines (that’s why I managed to snap some photos) in this podcast.

I invite you to eavesdrop in this chikahan galore that goes from Zaturnnah inside stories to Vince’s love story to being an OFW, etcetera, etcetera!

Zaturnnah ze Muzical – 5th run!

Events 19 comments

Zsazsa Zaturnnah is going to zoar once again in its 5th run! Why would people run and buy tickets for this musical? Well, well, well (said while holding a wine glass between ring and middle finger, palms up, swaying left and right, chin up, with attitude) here are some reasons!
